Chip (EMV) Debit Transactions
- When you insert a chip debit card, the chip creates a unique cryptographic code for that transaction.
- The payment terminal determines whether the transaction should be processed as debit or credit based on the card, terminal, and issuer’s rules.
- If processed as debit, the terminal may ask for a PIN. The PIN is verified by the card issuer or payment network as part of the authorization process.
- If processed as credit, the transaction is usually authorized with a signature or no signature, depending on the issuer and merchant.
Contactless (Tap-to-Pay)
- Contactless payments use EMV technology as well, generating dynamic transaction data for each purchase.
- Depending on the issuer, merchant, and transaction amount, a PIN may or may not be required.
Why a PIN Is Sometimes Required
A retailer’s terminal may request a PIN because:
- The card is being routed through a debit network.
- The card issuer requires PIN verification.
- The transaction amount or risk level triggers additional verification

- Fraud detection systems that monitor unusual spending patterns.
